The Countrywide Library of Medication (NLM) is honored to announce its acquisition of the papers of Louis W. Sullivan, MD, previous United States Secretary of Overall health and Human Expert services (HHS). This is the initial collection of papers from a previous HHS Secretary, acquired by the NLM and will be element of the archival collections of the world’s largest health-related library and institute of the Countrywide Institutes of Overall health (NIH).
Louis W. Sullivan is an African American health practitioner who served as secretary of HHS from 1989-1993 and as dean and president of Morehouse Faculty of Medication (MSM) from 1975-1989 and from 1993-2002. The Countrywide Institute on Minority Overall health and Overall health Disparities at NIH was initial proven as an Business less than the NIH Director as a result of Secretary Sullivan in 1990 and was elevated to an Institute in 2010.
The Louis W. Sullivan Papers consist of Dr. Sullivan’s HHS chronological correspondence, motion/briefing information, every day calendars, speeches, news clippings, White Household memorabilia, celebration photos, and honorary levels and awards. The collection documents Secretary Sullivan’s endeavours to educate the general public on the hazards of tobacco use, including stopping the introduction of Uptown, a cigarette made for marketing to minority communities introduce new and improved foodstuff labels initiate a $one hundred million minority male wellbeing and injury prevention initiative and increase the Countrywide Institutes of Overall health budget above $5 billion.
About his time as Secretary, Dr. Sullivan mentioned: “I am grateful for the possibility to have served as U.S. Secretary of Overall health and Human Expert services, all through a major time to oversee the enlargement of its programs and add to the racial, ethnic, and gender diversity of its management. This enhanced the department’s outreach to all Us residents.”
Dr. Sullivan attained his undergraduate degree from Morehouse School in 1954 and his health-related degree in 1958 from Boston College Faculty of Medication.
Right after keeping positions at Harvard Clinical Faculty, Seton Hall School of Medication, Boston College Clinical Heart, and Boston Metropolis Medical center, Dr. Sullivan returned to Morehouse School in 1975 to provide as dean and director of the Clinical Schooling Program. Below his management, the Clinical Schooling Program grew to become impartial from Morehouse School in 1981 and was renamed Morehouse Faculty of Medication (MSM). Dr. Sullivan served as president and dean of MSM prior to and adhering to his tenure as secretary of HHS. He was also chair of the President’s Board of Advisors on Historically Black Schools and Universities from 2002-2009 and was co-chair of the President’s Fee on HIV and AIDS from 2001-2006.
Dr. Sullivan is chairman of the Sullivan Alliance to Change the Overall health Professions and is the founding president of the Association of Minority Overall health Professions Universities (AMHPS). He is the creator of The Morehouse Mystique: Starting to be a Health care provider at the Nation’s Newest African American Clinical Faculty (with Marybeth Gasman, 2012, Johns Hopkins College Push) and his autobiography Breaking Floor: My Everyday living in Medication (with David Chanoff, 2014, College of Georgia Push).
The NLM History of Medication Division homes the papers of well known general public wellbeing leaders, including other officers of the U.S. Division of Overall health and Human Expert services (and its predecessor the U.S. Division of Overall health, Schooling and Welfare), including Faye Abdellah, Edward Brandt, Emery Johnson, and June Osborn the papers of NIH Directors Harold Varmus, Bernadine Healy, Donald Fredrickson, James A. Shannon, Robert Marston and the papers of Surgeons General Regina Benjamin, Jocelyn Elders, C. Everett Koop, Antonia Novello, Julius Richmond, and Luther Terry.
